Series Intro: Awake
We’re going to step into a new series today—and the experts tell you NOT to do this on a Holiday Weekend…but here I am, so I’m going to introduce this as a story:
- From my experience, there are two kinds of people in a marriage when it’s time for bed.
- First, there are the normal people… who just go to sleep.
- And then there are people like my wife… who need a full evening routine that involvves at least one episode of a medical drama before their body gives them permission to rest.
- When we first got married, This was new for me, because I didn’t watch TV to go to sleep.
- But she would turn on ER Code Red or Somebody’s Anatomy..and here I am ready to sleep and face the next day, and the next thing I know, I’m emotionally invested in a fictional patient who has a rare tropical disease and only one kidney. and Dr. Murphy’s about to do a heart-lung transplant with a paperclip and a prayer.
- And I would look over or I would hear something that sounds like “sleeping” and I’d say—- Are you awake… yea.
- Jessica gets insulted if you accuse her of sleeping because… bad people sleep
- And she has a real problem. She sleeps every night.
- So I’d ask her again… you asleep?
- No… she would never own up to it.
- You know what i started doing… “what just happened” and she would tell me stuff that happened 15 minutes ago. Busted.
- Meanwhile, I’m wide awake—invested in Scalpel Bay’s storyline—watching a fictional patient survive a helicopter crash and a shark bite in the same episode.
- She’s in REM sleep.
- I’m emotionally traumatized.
- Now, fast forward a few years… and Jessica’s matured.
- She doesn’t do the medical shows anymore.
- Now it’s… reels.
- The same reel.
