1. Intro

We’ve been in this series called Awake, looking at what it means to stay spiritually alive, alert, and anchored in Christ.

Because here’s the truth: starting strong matters, but finishing awake is what really counts.

When I was younger and playing baseball, I had some tough coaches. They didn’t tolerate mental mistakes.

Physical mistakes happen — you can swing and miss, you can boot a ground ball.

But a mental mistake? Missing the cutoff man, not paying attention to the count, not knowing how many outs there were? That would get you pulled fast.

Why? Because focus matters. In sports and in life…

If you want to win, you need to focus.

You can’t out-hustle or make up for a lack of alertness.

When you’re not alert — it costs the whole team.

And spiritually, it’s the same. One moment of distraction, one season of dullness, and the enemy takes advantage. That’s why Scripture calls us to stay alert.

2. Scripture Reading – 1 Peter 5b:6–11 (NLT)

And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. All power to him forever! Amen.

3. Context

Peter is writing to Christians scattered across Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). These weren’t easy times. Believers were facing social rejection, false accusations, and outright persecution because of their faith in Jesus. Many were tempted to shrink back, blend in, or give up altogether.

The whole letter carries one major theme: how to stand firm and live holy in a hostile world.
