Intro
If you’ve got your bible, open up to Joshua 24. Before we dive into what Joshua said, let’s take a moment to understand when he said it.
- Joshua 24 isn’t the beginning of a journey—it’s the end of one.
- Joshua is standing before the people of Israel—not as a young warrior with something to prove, but as an old leader with something to pass on.
- He has now been strong and courageous. He has fought the good fight.
- He’s nearing the end of his life. His hair is gray. His body is worn. His days of battle are behind him. But one thing hasn’t changed—his heart still burns with conviction.
- This is the man who once walked through the Red Sea.
- When others were full of fear—he was the one full of faith.
- The man who stood by Moses.
- The man who watched walls fall, kings fall, and the sun stand still.
- But in this moment—he’s not handing out swords.
- He’s not assigning armies.
- He’s not giving battle orders.
- He’s handing down something even greater—a spiritual legacy.
The Situation
Israel has made it to the Promised Land. They’re settled. Successful.
- But they’re also surrounded—by cultural pressure, by pagan gods, by spiritual drift.
- Joshua knows what’s at stake.
- He says: You’ve got a choice to make.
- You can worship the gods of your past—the idols of Egypt.
- You can give in to the culture around you—the gods of the Amorites.
- Or you can worship the LORD.
- But what You can’t do is serve God and still bow to the idols of convenience, comfort, or compromise.
Modern Connection: This Moment Still Matters
Joshua’s words aren’t locked in history—they’re speaking *right now.*We may not be standing in Canaan, but we are standing in a world just as full of distraction, pressure, and competing voices.
Today’s fathers aren’t choosing between carved idols—but we are choosing between comfort and conviction… between drifting and leading… passivity and purpose.
The idols just look different now:
- Success at all costs
- Numbing out with screens
